JavaLaurence Posted July 1, 2013 at 07:18 PM Share Posted July 1, 2013 at 07:18 PM Hi, Does the Stepper Brick allow virtually silent operation of stepper motors? I'm a stepper newbie so have never played with them, but I read that if the motor can be driven with a sine and cosine waveform, that silent operation can be achieved... I've got an idea for a project with stepper motors, but I need the motors to be silent.. Thx.
borg Posted July 1, 2013 at 07:31 PM Share Posted July 1, 2013 at 07:31 PM You may get a tolerable low volume while it is running in micro stepping mode. But as soon as the stepper motor is standing still and there is still power on it (i.e. it holds the position with force and is not free-wheeling) there will be high pitched noises. I don't think there is anything one can do about that.
JavaLaurence Posted July 1, 2013 at 07:38 PM Author Share Posted July 1, 2013 at 07:38 PM The following stepper demo seems to show silent running .. I was just wondering whether I could get the same low dB out of a TinkerForge setup? If so, then I'll plunge in.. ;-)
borg Posted July 1, 2013 at 08:05 PM Share Posted July 1, 2013 at 08:05 PM Thats impressive, no idea how that works. I doubt that the stepper motors would be that silent if driven with Stepper Bricks. But that thing costs 300€ with VAT : http://granitedevices.mycashflow.fi/product/2/versatile-servo-drive-vsd-xe
